NEWSY NEWS:

Max left for Portland on Monday, June 28, to begin his new life as an assistant fencing instructor under the tutelage of Maestro Ed Korfanty, the U.S. Olympic women’s sabre coach.

Max will be working at schools and recreation centers teaching beginning sabre while learning from Ed and fencing at OFA (Oregon Fencing Alliance).

Just across town is Northwest Fencing Center where Sebastien Dos Santos, the U.S. National men’s epee coach, teaches. As you know, Max has his A10 in epee and an E10 in sabre and epee is Max’s primary weapon.  So Max, hopefully, will also be able to train with Dos Santos in epee and, perhaps, even assist in teaching beginning epee at NFC.

If that’s not enough, Max will also be attending junior college in Portland.  Max has started a blog where he will recount his adventures.  If you are interested in seeing and hearing Max on his blog, (he’s using a webcam), send your email address to Max at mfencer@yahoo.com and he’ll add you to his email list.

Also in Portland at OFA this past June was Ellis DeVoe who attended Korfanty’s summer sabre fencing camp.

DIVISION NEWS:

Our San Bernardino Division officers for the 2010-2011 fencing season are:

Ann Oswald, Chair                                          Diane Whan, Secretary

Josh Butler, Vice-Chair                                Leslie Taft, Treasurer

I am currently working on the 2010-2011 division fencing schedule.  Dates have already been submitted to COD, Hemet High School, Victor Valley High School and Harvey Mudd.  We are awaiting confirmation of dates and will post dates and locations on AskFred, the San Bernardino Division website and the DFA website.

CLUB NEWS:  This summer has been very exciting with new members joining DFA, Max going to Portland, Ellis going to a sabre camp, Gretchen Bueermann off to Colorado College after a gap year adventuring in the Rockies with the National Outdoor Leadership School and many more of our members taking vacations and doing nifty stuff.  Also, Rendy Opdycke, U.S. Olympic Pentathlete hopeful, who has been coming to the club and training in epee.

As for me in August, I’ll be in the Berkshires in western Massachussettes, attending a coaches camp sponsored by the Fencers Club of New York.

For sabre, Mariel Zagunis, the 2004, 2008 U.S. Olympic women’s gold medalist will be there as well as silver medalists Mika’il Sankofa and Akhnaten Spencer-El.  For epee it’s Hungarian coach Kornel Udvarhelyi, and Russian coach Boris Vaksman, both coaches at the Fencers Club in New York.  I should have lots ofnew items to teach when I return!

Wishing everyone a great July and blissful fencing.

Leslie Taft,

The Fencing Coach
